In recent years multilayer networks are emerging as a novel and powerful way to describe complex systems. Multilayer networks are ubiquitous and include social networks, financial markets, infrastructures, molecular networks and the brain.

The cornerstone of modern finance is the efficient market hypothesis. Under this hypothesis all information available about a financial asset is immediately incorporated into its price dynamics by fully rational investors. In contrast to this hypothesis many studies have pointed out behavioral biases in investors. Recently, it has become possible to access databases that track the trading decisions of investors.

In the context of knowledge and information societies, new tendencies in the long/medium term evolution of urban systems, together with new data and methods, require that existing theoretical assumptions and conceptualizations would be challenged as global urban hierarchies are reconfigured. The connection between urban systems at different levels of organization becomes more and more relevant for understanding urban systems and their transformations. But the inter-urban perspective is not sufficient to encompass these dynamics.

Achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement demands a world-wide transformation to a fossil-fuel-free world within the next 30 years. We propose a framework for identifying social tipping elements, that is, subsystems of the world-Earth system where a targeted human intervention can activate social tipping-like processes leading to a rapid reduction in anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, fast enough to avoid crossing the dangerous tipping points in the Earth’s climate system.
